Local Area
We’d love to share with you some of our favourite things to do locally, in the village and beyond… Some things that you won’t find in any tourist brochures!!
A delightful and much sought-after coastal village of stone cottages and Regency houses, on the South Cornish Coast near St. Austell.
Charlestown is famous for its collection of tall ships riding at anchor in the harbour, the shipwreck museum, excellent pubs and restaurants and easy access to the coastal path – It really is the perfect holiday destination.
It has even been used as a filming location, most well known for appearing in Poldark, but also for BBC 1 Series; Taboo, and films such as Alice in Wonderland, Rebecca, and Treasure Island.
The area is rich in golf courses with Carlyon Bay and Porthpean close by. Ladies, whilst waiting for your man to finish his round, make the most of the divine spa facilities at Carlyon Bay; a real treat.
The picturesque fishing village of Mevagissey which has been featured recently on Rick Steins’ Cornwall TV program, is just a 20 minutes’ drive away by car, while the Lost Gardens of Heligan, several stately homes and gardens and the fabulous Eden Project are all within 5 miles.
Dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World by some, Eden is not only a fascinating location, but, more importantly, a fun and family-friendly day out
Curious kids can discover where tea, rubber and sugar come from, and travel the world to the simulated environments of tropical destinations that they dream of traveling to in the future. There are themed events throughout the seasons, workshops for adults and children, activity days, music concerts and much more, including Ice Skating in the Biomes during the Winter months.
For another day of exploration, step back in time and lose yourself in Europe’s largest garden restoration; a world of romance, heritage and adventure, at The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Rope bridges, bamboo gardens, The Giant’s Head, and Maori-carved tree ferns and all wait to be discovered, allowing imaginations, big and small, to run wild.
A trip to Cornwall isn’t complete without some beach time, so take the pooch to one of the plethora where they’re permitted all year round (Always check seasonal bans), including Gorran Haven’s Vault Beach, Porthluney Beach and Hemmick Beach; Mevagissey’s Polstreath and Colona Beaches; and St Austell’s Coome Haven, Par Sands and Hallane Beaches.
Don’t forget the world-renowned South West Coast path for some soul-stirring walking routes that your dog will adore. Try Charlestown to Porthpean, Mevagissey to Charlestown, Trelissick’s woodland walk, Pentewan Valley Trail and Luxulyan Valley.
During your holiday in Charlestown, whether you fancy a gorgeous garden one day, a gallery or museum the next, or perhaps something a little more active – surf schools, boat trips, cliff top walking, cycling…You really are spoilt for choice here.
